WoW, World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft (also known as WOW) is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) published by Vivendi Universal and developed by Blizzard Entertainment.
Since the games release on November 23, 2004, WOW has won numerous awards and as of March 2007 there were a reported 8.5 million worldwide subscribers making it the most popular MMORPG game in the world. About 3.5 million subscribers are located in China, over 2 million in North America, and 1.5 million are located in Europe. The game’s first expansion pack, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade was released in January 2007.
Players control WOW characters as they perform World of Warcraft quests, fight monsters and adventure for rewards such as gold, experience, and items. Players can be solo adventurers for most parts of the game but other parts like dungeons or instances are designed for team work or World of Warcraft guilds.
In WOW, there are server clusters (realms) to differentiate the 4 types of gameplay that players will partake in: Normal (also known as PvE or Player vs. environment) PvP (player vs. player), RP-PvP (roleplaying PvP server), and RP (roleplaying Normal/PvE server).
World of Warcraft is set in two different planets: Azeroth which is the location of the two continents Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms, and Outland which was added with the release of WOW: The Burning Crusade expansion.
In World of Warcraft players can choose from different character races which are split into two opposing groups: the Horde and the Alliance faction. The Horde faction is made up of the Undead (sometimes called the Forsaken) Orcs, Tauren, Trolls, and Blood Elves (available only with The Burning Crusade expansion) and the Alliance faction consists of Dwarves, Humans, Gnomes, Night Elves and Draenei (available only with the expansion). The 9 different classes to choose from are Mage, Druid, Priest, Hunter, Rogue, Paladin, Warrior, Shaman and Rogue.
